Garage door replacement

Replacing your garage door and not sure what size to order?

Most replacements match the opening you already have. In our install records the most common size is a 16x7 two-car door, followed by 16x8, 9x7 and 8x7.

Is this what you're seeing?

  • You are replacing an old door and want to know whether the size has to stay the same.

  • You are choosing between a standard 7-foot door and a taller 8-foot door.

  • You have a one-car and a two-car option and want to know what most people pick.

  • You are not sure whether your headroom and side room are enough for a new door.

What's going on

The opening sets the size, not the other way around. The door needs to be a little wider than the opening and tall enough to cover it, and it needs room above and beside the opening for the track. Our what size garage door do I need answer shows how to measure.

Single doors in our records are mostly 8 or 9 feet wide and 7 feet tall, and two-car doors are mostly 16 feet wide. A taller 8-foot door is a real option on both. Less common sizes, like 10 feet wide or 18 feet wide, show up where the garage was built wider.

If your headroom is tight, the door can still be 7 feet tall on a low-headroom track. Taller doors use high-lift hardware to use extra height in the garage.

What to do right now

Do

  • Measure the opening width and height at its narrowest points, and write both down.

  • Measure the headroom above the opening, from the top of the opening to the ceiling or the first obstruction.

  • Check the room on each side of the opening, for the track and the springs.

Don't

  • Don’t order a door from a size on the old door’s label alone. Openings get reframed and doors get swapped over the years.

  • Don’t assume the new door has to match the neighbor’s. It has to match your opening.

How we fix it

Size is the first choice in a new garage door installation. These are the sizes in our install records where the record states a size.

Repair or replace?

If the door only needs a part, see replacing one section or a broken spring. A new door is for when the door itself is past fixing.
