Garage door replacement

Replacing your garage door and stuck on insulated or not?

Insulation makes a door warmer, quieter and more solid, and it is the choice most of our customers make. A non-insulated door costs less and is fine for a detached or unheated garage.

Is this what you're seeing?

  • You are replacing an old door and the quote has an insulated and a non-insulated option.

  • The garage is attached, or there is a room above or next to it.

  • You use the garage as a workshop, gym or storage that you want kept warmer.

  • You want to know what other people with your size door chose.

What's going on

A non-insulated steel door is a single steel skin. An insulated door adds a layer of foam and usually a second steel back, which slows heat loss through the door and makes it stiffer and quieter when it runs.

How much it matters depends on the garage. For an attached garage, or one with living space above, the door is a big uninsulated wall. For a detached shed-style garage that is never heated, the extra cost buys less.

What to do right now

Do

  • Decide whether the garage is ever heated or shares a wall with the house.

  • Measure the opening and note the headroom above it, since low headroom changes the track.

  • Think about windows now. They are much easier to choose at the start than to add later.

Don't

  • Don’t judge a door by thickness alone. How it is built matters as much as the number on the label.

  • Don’t reuse old springs on a new door. A different door weight needs springs matched to it.

How we fix it

Insulation is one of the first choices in a new garage door installation. Our install records show what customers chose when the record says either way.

Repair or replace?

If your current door only has a worn seal, a sagging section or a broken spring, it may be worth repairing instead. See door sagging in the middle and loud bang, door won’t open.
