Garage door panel replacement

Bent or dented garage door panel? Can just one section be replaced?

Often yes, if the section is still made and will match the rest of the door. The bottom section is the one we replace most. When a match is not available, the door itself is the answer.

Is this what you're seeing?

  • The bottom section is bent, dented, crushed or coming apart, but the rest of the door looks fine.

  • A panel is cracked or delaminating, and the door still opens and closes.

  • You want to know whether a single replacement section will match the color and style of the rest.

  • You were quoted a full new door and wonder if one section would do.

What's going on

A sectional door is a stack of sections joined by hinges. Each one can be replaced on its own: the door is unstacked, the new section goes in, the door is restacked, and the springs are reset. The bottom section takes the most abuse and is the one that most often gets replaced.

The catch is matching. The new section has to fit your door’s model, size, color and panel style, and some doors are no longer made. See can I replace one garage door panel and discontinued panels. A section can also arrive in a close color and need paint.

In our records most of these homes stayed with a section repair. Of the homes with a section job, only a small share went on to buy a full door within the next year.

What to do right now

Do

  • Take a photo of the damaged section and one of the whole door, and note the door size.

  • Look for a model or label on the door, usually on the end of a section or the edge of the top panel.

  • If the door still runs, run it as little as you can until it is looked at.

Don't

  • Don’t pull on a bent section to straighten it. The hinges and cables around it are under load.

  • Don’t unbolt anything on the bottom section. The bottom brackets hold cable tension.

How we fix it
