Garage door panel replacement

Garage door sagging or bowing in the middle?

A sagging section, usually the top one, has lost its stiffness. On most of these jobs we brace it with steel struts rather than replacing it, and fix whatever let it sag.

Is this what you're seeing?

  • The top section of the door dips in the middle when the door is open.

  • The door looks bowed from the inside when it’s up.

  • Sections are starting to crack or separate at the hinges.

  • The door is wide, often 16 feet, and the sag gets worse over time.

What's going on

Each door section spans the full width of the opening. When the door is open, it hangs flat overhead, and on wide doors the middle can slowly bow. A strut is a steel brace screwed across the section to keep it straight.

Sagging gets worse when the door is out of balance or the opener pushes on a weak top section. Springs that are the wrong size for the door are one cause we see.

What to do right now

Do

  • Keep using the door gently if it still opens and closes smoothly.

  • Look for cracks along the hinges of the sagging section.

Don't

  • Don’t keep running the door if a section is cracking. It can fail while the door is open.

  • Don’t try to bend the section back yourself.

How we fix it

Sagging sections fall under garage door panel replacement, but replacing the section is not always needed. Our records show what these jobs involved.

Repair or replace?

Struts are often a good fix for years. If the section is cracked through or the door is old and sagging badly, replacing the section or the whole door is the better long-term answer.
