End Stile

Definition

An end stile is the vertical structural member at each end of a garage door section. It carries the edge hinges (graduated hinges) that attach to neighboring sections and provides the attachment point for the bottom roller at the section corners. End stiles run the full height of each section and are hidden behind the door skin.

An end stile is the vertical steel or wood member at each far end of a garage door section. Every section in a sectional door has one end stile on the left and one on the right. The end stile spans the full height of the section and is captured between the top rail and bottom rail that form the horizontal edges of the section frame.

The end stile serves two jobs. First, it provides the mounting surface for the graduated edge hinges that connect adjacent sections. These hinges must be positioned at the exact height the manufacturer specifies so the sections fold correctly as the door travels through the track radius. Second, the corner roller hinge attaches to the end stile at the top or bottom section, providing the track roller that runs in the vertical track closest to the jamb.

In steel door construction, end stiles are typically formed from 16 or 14 gauge steel channel. The stile is part of the section's structural skeleton, which also includes the top rail, meeting rails, and bottom rail. Together these members hold the door skin flat and resist racking forces.

End stiles differ from center stiles. A center stile runs vertically at the mid-width of a section and is where center hinges attach. End stiles are always at the outer edges. On wide doors (typically 16 feet or more), an additional intermediate stile may be added between the center and end stiles for extra rigidity.

When an end stile cracks or the hinge mounting holes elongate from wear, the section loses its ability to hold the edge hinge tight. A loose edge hinge causes the door to travel out of alignment in the track, often producing noise and uneven wear on the rollers. Replacing an individual section usually means the new section's end stile must match the original in height and hinge-hole pattern.

The end stile on the bottom section also anchors the bottom bracket, which is the fitting that connects the lifting cable from the counterbalance system to the door.
