Garage door replacement

Thinking about a full-view glass garage door?

A full-view door has glass panels in an aluminum frame, so the door lets light in and looks modern. It is a special order, it is heavier, and the glass choice matters. We install them, but not many people choose them.

Is this what you're seeing?

  • You want a modern look or a lot of natural light in the garage.

  • The garage is a workshop, gym or studio where light matters.

  • You are comparing a glass door against a flush steel door with a row of windows.

  • You want to know what has to be checked before ordering one.

What's going on

A full-view door replaces the steel panels with glass in an aluminum frame. The glass can be clear, frosted or tinted, and it can be single-pane or an insulated, double-pane unit. See full-view glass garage doors and aluminum or steel.

Glass doors are a special order, so plan for a longer wait than a stock steel door. In our records the full-view doors range from a standard one-car size up to wide custom openings, and several were quoted with taller or high-lift track to suit the opening.

The tradeoff is privacy and insulation. Clear glass shows the inside of the garage, and a glass door without insulated glass will not hold heat like an insulated steel door.

What to do right now

Do

  • Decide on the glass: clear, frosted or tinted, and whether you want insulated glass.

  • Measure the opening and the headroom, since glass doors can need heavier hardware.

  • Think about what is stored in sight of the street.

Don't

  • Don’t assume a glass door will match a steel door’s warmth. Ask about the glass.

  • Don’t reuse old springs. A glass door has a different weight.
