Garage door opener installation
Does your tall or 8-foot garage door need a different opener?
A standard garage door opener comes with a rail for a 7-foot door. A taller door, an 8-foot door or a high-lift track needs a longer rail, or a rail extension, so the garage door opener can lift the door all the way.
Is this what you're seeing?
Your door is 8 feet or taller, or the opening was raised.
The door stops short of open because the rail is too short.
You have a high ceiling or a high-lift track and want the door to lift out of the way.
You are replacing the door and the new one is taller than the old one.
What's going on
The rail on a garage door opener sets how far the trolley can pull the door. A standard rail suits a 7-foot door. For an 8-foot door the rail is longer, and for taller doors it is longer still. See rail extensions and high ceilings.
Most tall-door installs in our records simply used a longer rail rather than an add-on extension. The right length depends on the door height and on where the opener sits on the ceiling.
A taller door is also a heavier door, so we check the springs and set the limits and force for the new height before we finish.
What to do right now
Do
Measure the door height, not just the opening. We use it to size the rail.
Note whether the track is a standard, high-lift or vertical-lift track.
Check the ceiling height above the door for clearance.
Don't
Don’t add a rail extension to an old opener without checking the motor and the springs.
Don’t assume an 8-foot door means an 8-foot rail. Track type changes the answer.
How we fix it
We measure the door and the ceiling, pick the rail length, install the opener and set the limits for the taller door. This is part of garage door opener installation. Our records show what customers with taller doors chose.
