Garage door opener installation

Getting a new garage door: do you replace the opener too?

Keep the opener if it is modern, has working safety sensors, and is strong enough for the new door. Replace it if it is old, loud, or the new door is heavier or taller. Installing both together is common, and the opener is set for the new door in the same visit.

Is this what you're seeing?

  • You are replacing your garage door and the quote lists the opener as an option.

  • Your opener works, but it is more than about 15 years old.

  • The new door is insulated or taller, so it is heavier than the one it replaces.

  • You want to avoid paying for a second visit later.

What's going on

An opener is not tied to the door. Many openers carry over to a new door of the same size, and reusing your opener is often fine when it is modern and in good shape.

The new door changes the load, though. An insulated door is heavier than a thin steel one, and the opener has to be set again for its weight. See insulation weight and opener stress. A taller door can also need a longer rail.

Age matters most. An opener from before 1993 has no safety sensors, and an older chain unit is louder than a current belt drive. A door project is a natural time to deal with both.

What to do right now

Do

  • Find the opener’s brand and model number on the motor head. We use it to check the rail length and whether parts are still made.

  • Check that the safety sensors near the floor light up and the door reverses when it meets an obstruction.

  • Note the new door’s size and insulation, since both affect which opener fits.

Don't

  • Don’t assume the old opener will drive a new, heavier door without being set again.

  • Don’t install a new door on old springs. The springs must match the new door’s weight.

How we fix it

When the opener goes in with a new door, the door is installed and balanced first, then the opener is mounted, the limits and force are set for the new weight, and the remotes are programmed. This is part of garage door opener installation. This is what our records show.

Repair or replace?

If your opener is modern and runs well, keeping it is a reasonable choice. If you are unsure, our technician checks it during the door visit and tells you which way to go. For the door itself, see door replacement and installation.
