Garage door opener repair
Does your garage door stop before it is fully open or fully closed?
The opener has two settings that decide where the door stops: the travel limits and the force. When either drifts, or the door gets harder to move, it stops early or reverses. Here is how to tell which one it is.

Is this what you're seeing?
The door goes up part of the way and stops, or comes down and stops an inch or more above the floor.
It closes, hits the floor and goes back up.
It works some days and not others, often changing with the weather.
It started after a power outage, a battery swap, or someone reset the opener.
What's going on
An opener has to be told where the door starts and stops. Those two points are the travel limits. If the open limit is set too low the door stops short of fully open. If the close limit is set too high the door stops above the floor, or hits the floor and reverses.
The second setting is force. The opener stops or reverses when the door takes more effort than the setting allows. A stiff track, dry rollers or a weak spring all make the door harder to move, so a force setting that used to be fine starts stopping the door.
Sometimes the cause is mechanical: a loose arm, a bolt that backed out, or a bent bracket, so the opener pulls but the door does not follow all the way. That is why a limit reset alone does not always last.
What to do right now
Do
Watch where it stops. Short of open points at the open limit, short of closed at the close limit or the sensors.
Pull the emergency release and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy or stiff, stop: that is a spring or track problem, not a limit problem.
Check that the sensors at the bottom of the door are lit and that nothing is blocking them.
Don't
Don’t turn the force all the way up to make the door close. A door that can push hard can hurt someone or damage the car.
Don’t keep pressing the button on a door that will not move. Check the springs first.
Don’t adjust anything on the springs or cables yourself. That is the dangerous part of the door.
How we fix it
We check the door first, because a heavy or off-balance door will keep tripping the force setting however the limits are set. Then we set the limits and force, and test that the door reverses when it meets an obstruction. This is part of garage door opener repair. This is what our records show.

Repair or replace?
If the limits keep drifting on an older opener, the limit switches or the board may be failing, and a new opener may make more sense. If you only need remotes reset, see remote and keypad programming.
