How does myQ in-garage delivery work and is it secure?

Short answer

myQ in-garage delivery lets Amazon drivers place packages inside your garage. The door opens only when Amazon confirms an active delivery for your address. The driver gets one-time verified access. The door closes automatically after delivery, and you get a photo notification. Cost is $1.99 per order or free with Amazon Day with Key.

myQ in-garage delivery is a service that allows Amazon drivers to place packages inside your closed garage. Packages go inside instead of sitting on the porch where they can be stolen or damaged by weather. The system works through a verified, one-time access mechanism tied to a confirmed Amazon delivery for your specific address. The driver cannot open the door at will. The door closes automatically after the delivery is complete. Here is exactly how the system works and what security protections it includes.

How the access system works

When you have an eligible Amazon order, you can choose "in-garage delivery" at checkout. At the time of delivery, Amazon's system sends a temporary, single-use code to the myQ system. That code authorizes the garage door to open. This access is tied to a confirmed delivery in progress for your address. The door will not open unless Amazon's tracking system verifies that a package assigned to your home is actively being delivered at that moment.

The driver uses the Amazon app to trigger the door to open. The open command goes through Amazon's delivery verification, then to the myQ servers, and finally to your opener. The driver enters the garage, places the package, and exits. The myQ system then closes the door automatically. The access token is used up at that point and cannot be used again. There is no way for the driver to reuse it for a later visit.

You receive a push notification from the myQ app confirming the door opened and closed, along with the time of the delivery. On compatible camera-equipped openers such as the LiftMaster 84504R and 84505R (Secure View series), the system also sends a photo or short video clip. The 87802 does not include a built-in camera but supports an optional myQ camera accessory. The clip shows the delivery and the door in the closed position after the driver leaves.

The myQ app logs every door event with a timestamp. You can review the full access history at any time. This makes it easy to confirm what happened if a package goes missing or if you want to verify the door closed properly after a delivery.

Required hardware

myQ in-garage delivery requires one of the following:

Hardware option Description
myQ Smart Garage Hub Add-on device that connects an existing LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener to myQ
Built-in Wi-Fi opener LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener with Wi-Fi and myQ built in (no hub needed)
myQ Smart Garage Control Alternative retrofit device for compatible openers

The service works with Amazon Prime, Amazon Fresh, and Whole Foods Market deliveries. Not all Prime items qualify for in-garage delivery. But standard Prime, Prime One-Day, and Amazon Day orders generally do. You set your delivery preference in the Amazon app under Key settings. The preference applies to future orders automatically once it is set.

What it costs

In-garage delivery costs $1.99 per order as of the time of writing. This fee is waived when you choose Amazon Day with Key, which consolidates eligible orders into a single weekly delivery date. If you use Amazon Day regularly, you can get in-garage delivery at no per-order charge. The myQ app itself is free to download and use for basic monitoring.

Security protections built into the system

The most common concern about in-garage delivery is whether it is safe to give a delivery driver access to the inside of your garage. Several layers of protection address this.

One-time verified access. The door only opens when Amazon's delivery system confirms an active shipment for your address. The driver cannot open the door outside of a verified delivery window. There is no standing access. Each delivery requires a fresh authorization from Amazon's system before the door will move.

Driver accountability. Amazon delivery drivers assigned to Key deliveries are employees subject to Amazon's accountability systems. The driver's identity, delivery route, and exact time of access are logged in Amazon's records. This creates a documented chain of access for each delivery.

Auto-close with confirmation. The system closes the door after the delivery is complete. It then sends you a notification confirming the closed state. If the door fails to close for any reason, Amazon sends an immediate alert. Customer support is triggered to follow up.

Camera verification (optional but recommended). Camera-equipped LiftMaster openers with myQ integration record a short video of the delivery. The system sends a photo of the closed door after the driver leaves. This gives you a visual record of what happened during the delivery window.

The main limitation is that in-garage delivery does not change the physical security of the items stored in your garage. A driver who enters during delivery can see what is inside. For most households this is not a concern. If you store valuables near the garage door opening, it is worth keeping them out of view.

Setting it up, common questions, and local notes

Setting up myQ in-garage delivery requires a compatible opener and a myQ account linked to your Amazon Prime account. The setup steps are:

  1. Confirm your opener is compatible at myq.com by looking up your model number.
  2. Install the myQ Smart Garage Hub if your opener does not have built-in Wi-Fi already.
  3. Download the myQ app and create an account.
  4. Link your myQ account to Amazon via the Amazon Key settings in the Amazon app.
  5. Select in-garage delivery at checkout for eligible orders going forward.

The setup takes about 30 minutes if you already have a compatible opener. If your opener needs the Smart Garage Hub added, allow another 20 to 30 minutes for hub installation and Wi-Fi pairing. Most LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers made after 1993 with a yellow, red, or purple learn button are compatible with the hub. The hub connects to your home's 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and mounts near the opener with the included hardware.

What happens if the driver cannot fit the package in the garage? If a package is too large to fit through the door or does not qualify for inside placement, the driver will leave it at the door as a standard delivery. You are notified either way.

Can more than one delivery service use this feature? As of 2026, in-garage delivery through myQ is available for Amazon. Walmart+ has had a similar Key at Home feature on some openers, but availability varies. Check the myQ app for current supported services in your area.

Does in-garage delivery work if the internet goes down? No. The system requires an active internet connection to receive the delivery authorization from Amazon and myQ servers. If your home Wi-Fi or internet is down at delivery time, the driver will not be able to open the door and will deliver to the porch instead.

G Brothers installs myQ-compatible openers and Smart Garage Hubs across the Denver metro and Front Range. If your current opener does not support myQ, we can recommend and install a compatible model the same day, with free estimates. In-garage delivery is particularly useful in Denver's unpredictable weather, where packages left on a porch can be damaged by afternoon hail, spring snow, or blowing rain.
