Do I need a myQ Smart Garage Hub if my opener already has Wi-Fi?

Short answer

No. If your LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener already has built-in Wi-Fi with myQ, you do not need the Smart Garage Hub. The hub is only for existing openers without built-in Wi-Fi. Both options give you the same myQ app features, including remote control, alerts, and in-garage Amazon delivery.

The myQ Smart Garage Hub is an add-on device that gives smart features to existing LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers that lack built-in Wi-Fi. If your opener already has Wi-Fi and myQ built in, the hub is not needed. The confusion is common. Both paths lead to the same myQ app and the same features. But the hardware you need depends entirely on what your opener already includes.

What the myQ Smart Garage Hub does

The myQ Smart Garage Hub is a small device, roughly the size of a Wi-Fi extender. It mounts near your garage door opener and plugs into a nearby outlet. It connects to your home's 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. It communicates with your opener's radio receiver using the Security+ 2.0 protocol. Once connected, it gives your opener remote monitoring and control through the myQ app.

The hub was designed for the large installed base of LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers made between 1993 and the early 2010s. These openers have learn buttons but no native Wi-Fi. They work perfectly well mechanically, but they were built before smart home features were common. The hub adds those features without requiring a full opener replacement.

The hub communicates with your opener using the same radio protocol your wall button and remotes use. It monitors door position by listening for the opener's status signals. It can also trigger the opener to open or close via the myQ servers and your Wi-Fi connection.

One important note on compatibility: the hub requires your opener to have a learn button. Most LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers made after 1993 have one (yellow, red, purple, or green). Older openers that use DIP switches for remote programming do not have a learn button and are not compatible with the hub. The one exception is openers with a blue learn button using the 433 MHz frequency, which the myQ hub does not support.

What built-in Wi-Fi openers include

Current LiftMaster and Chamberlain residential openers at the mid-range and above include myQ Wi-Fi built directly into the motor head. These models connect to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network during setup. They do not require any extra hardware for myQ to work.

Examples of built-in Wi-Fi openers include LiftMaster 84602, 87504, and 87802, as well as Chamberlain B6713T and similar B and C-series models. These openers have a small LED indicator on the motor head that shows Wi-Fi connection status. The setup is done through the myQ app and usually takes under 10 minutes.

Built-in Wi-Fi openers tend to have slightly faster response times than hub-connected setups. There is no intermediate device in the communication chain. Commands go from the app to myQ servers and then straight to the opener. The difference in practice is small - usually a second or two faster - but the direct connection is simpler and has one fewer potential point of failure.

Some built-in Wi-Fi openers also include integrated camera options. The LiftMaster 84504R and 84505R (Secure View series), for example, have built-in cameras that record video of deliveries and send photo confirmation that the door closed. The 87802 does not include a built-in camera but is compatible with a separately purchased myQ camera accessory. Camera-integrated models are only available in the built-in Wi-Fi line, not with the hub.

For in-garage Amazon delivery, the myQ support portal and the myQ in-garage delivery page both confirm that the hub, built-in Wi-Fi, and myQ Smart Garage Control all qualify equally. Amazon does not distinguish between them.

Which option is right for your situation

Choose the Smart Garage Hub if: Your existing opener is working well and has a yellow, red, or purple learn button. You want to add smart features without replacing the entire unit. The hub costs much less than a new opener. Installation takes 30 minutes or less. It is also the right choice if your opener is a Chamberlain or LiftMaster model from the early 2000s to early 2010s that you want to keep running for a few more years. Many of those openers are built to last and have no reason to be replaced just for a smart feature upgrade.

Choose a built-in Wi-Fi opener if: Your opener is more than 10 to 12 years old and starting to show signs of mechanical wear. Or if you want the cleaner single-device setup without a separate hub plugged in nearby. Or if you want camera options built into the opener, which are only available on certain built-in Wi-Fi models. Or if you are already buying a new opener for any other reason - in that case, just choose a model with Wi-Fi built in.

The hub will not work if: Your opener has no learn button (pre-1993 DIP-switch models). Or if it has a non-Chamberlain-Group radio protocol (such as a Genie or Overhead Door opener). Or if it uses a blue learn button on the 433 MHz frequency, which the hub does not support. For Genie openers, the equivalent smart accessory is the Aladdin Connect adapter, which works with compatible Genie models instead of the myQ hub.

What the myQ Smart Garage Control is

A third option exists that is sometimes confused with the hub: the myQ Smart Garage Control. This is also a retrofit Wi-Fi adapter for existing openers, similar to the Smart Garage Hub but with a slightly different hardware design and compatibility range. Both serve the same basic function. If you see either listed when shopping for compatibility, check the myQ website to confirm your specific opener model works with the device you are considering.

The myQ app is the same regardless of which hardware you use to connect. Once set up, remote open/close, activity history, guest access for up to 5 users, and Amazon Key integration all work the same way whether you have a hub, a built-in Wi-Fi opener, or the Smart Garage Control. The myQ support portal at support.chamberlaingroup.com lists the hub and Smart Garage Control as distinct product categories, but the user experience in the app is the same for both.

One thing to know about the myQ app itself: the basic monitoring and control features are free. Chamberlain does not charge a subscription for remote open/close, alerts, or in-garage delivery. Guest access for up to 5 users is also included at no cost. The app is available for iOS and Android.

If you are trying to decide whether to buy a hub now or replace the opener in a year or two, the hub is a low-cost way to bridge the gap. At around $65 for the hub itself, you get full myQ features right away without committing to a new opener. When you do eventually replace the opener, buy a built-in Wi-Fi model and you will not need the hub anymore.
