Garage door opener installation

Need a quiet garage door opener for a room above the garage?

A belt-drive opener is the usual answer, because a rubber-reinforced belt runs much quieter than a metal chain. A wall-mount opener helps too, since the motor is off the ceiling. A noisy door can still be loud with a good opener, so check that too.

Is this what you're seeing?

  • There is a bedroom, nursery or home office over or beside the garage.

  • The opener shakes the ceiling or wakes someone when the door runs.

  • Your current opener is a chain drive and you want to know if belt is worth it.

  • You are replacing the door and the opener at the same time.

What's going on

Most of the noise from a chain opener is the chain running along the rail, plus the motor vibrating through the ceiling mounts. A belt drive replaces the chain with a reinforced belt, which removes most of the metal-on-metal sound. See belt versus chain noise.

The second source is where the motor sits. A ceiling-mounted opener passes its vibration into the joists, which is what you hear in a room above. A wall-mount opener puts the motor beside the door and leaves the ceiling mostly clear. It needs the right clearance, so we check the garage first.

The third source is the door itself. Dry hinges, worn rollers and a door out of balance make noise that has nothing to do with the opener, and a new opener will not fix it.

What to do right now

Do

  • Listen to when the noise happens: the motor starting, the chain moving, or the door itself.

  • Check whether the opener is a chain drive. If it is, belt is the biggest single change.

  • Ask for a quote that compares belt drive and wall-mount for your garage.

Don't

  • Don’t buy on horsepower alone. Drive type and how the motor is mounted matter more for noise.

  • Don’t replace a quiet-running opener to fix a noisy door. Check the rollers and hinges first.

How we fix it

We look at the door and the garage before recommending a drive, then install and tune the opener. This is part of garage door opener installation. Our install records show the belt-drive openers customers chose.

If your opener is fine and the noise is the door, a roller and hinge service may be all you need. If the opener is old or loud, see repair or replace your opener.
