Definition

A logic board is the main circuit board inside a garage door opener motor unit. It receives signals from remotes, keypads, wall consoles, and safety sensors, then commands the motor to open, stop, or close the door. A failed logic board can be replaced to restore an otherwise working opener.

A logic board is the electronic circuit board inside the motor head of a garage door opener. It is the component that receives signals from transmitters and other devices and converts those signals into commands to open and close the garage door.

The logic board is the brain of the opener. It listens for signals from three sources. First, the radio receiver picks up transmissions from remotes and wireless keypads. Second, the wall console sends a signal over two wires when a button is pressed. Third, safety sensor wiring connects the photo eye sensors near the floor to the board.

When a valid open or close command arrives, the logic board starts the motor. It runs the motor until the door reaches the correct limit position, then stops it.

The board also handles safety functions. If the photo eye beam breaks while the door is closing, the board reverses the motor at once. If the force sensor detects too much resistance, the board stops or reverses the door. Both of these behaviors are required by UL 325.

Modern logic boards store rolling code pairing data for each remote. The learn button puts the board into pairing mode. When a remote button is pressed, the board saves that remote's identity. Holding the learn button for several seconds wipes all stored codes.

Common failure symptoms: the door ignores all remotes, the door runs without stopping, or the opener trips with no obstruction present. Replacement boards are model-specific; a board from one model line will not work in a different one. Always match the replacement board to the opener's model number and refer to the manufacturer's parts catalog.
