Garage door opener installation
Got stuck in the garage in a power outage? Get a battery backup opener.
A garage door opener with battery backup keeps the garage door opener running when the power is out, so you can open and close the door normally. Many current openers offer it, and it can go in with a new opener.
Is this what you're seeing?
The power went out and you could not get the car out, or could not get in.
You had to pull the red release cord and lift the door by hand.
You rely on the garage as your main entrance.
You are replacing your opener anyway and want it to keep working in an outage.
What's going on
A standard garage door opener runs on mains power only. When the power goes out the door will not run, and the way out is the red release cord and lifting by hand. See opener battery backup.
A battery-backup garage door opener has a small battery in the unit. When power fails it keeps running the door for a number of cycles, and it recharges when power returns.
Battery backup is a feature of newer openers rather than an add-on to an old one, so it is usually installed as part of a new opener. Our records list it on a small share of installs.
What to do right now
Do
Know where the red release cord is and how to use it. Do it only if the door is balanced and the springs are not broken.
Check the opener’s model number and age. Older openers cannot be fitted with a battery.
Ask whether a new opener with battery backup fits your door.
Don't
Don’t pull the release with the door up if you suspect a broken spring.
Don’t rely on a garage door opener with no backup as your only way out in a long outage.
How we fix it
We install the garage door opener with its battery backup, set the limits and force, test the sensors and program the remotes. This is part of garage door opener installation. This is what our records show.
