Garage door stuck open and will not secure?

Is this what you're seeing?
The door is up and will not come down, or only part way.
It closed but will not latch, or the lock is jammed.
The opener runs but the door will not move, and it is open.
A track or cable problem has left a gap you cannot close.
It is getting dark and you are worried about the house.
What's going on
An open garage door matters because the garage is often the easiest way into a house. Tools, bikes, cars and a door to the home sit behind it. A door stuck open is usually caused by a broken spring or cable, an off-track roller, an opener that disconnected itself, or a bent section that jammed in the track.
The key point is that the reason it will not close decides what is safe to try. If a spring has snapped, the door is not balanced and can drop suddenly. If a cable has come off, one side is hanging. If the opener simply lost its connection, lowering the door may be easy, but we would not guess from the driveway.
Security is the actual problem tonight. Think of the garage as a part of the home that is now outdoors. Lock the interior door, turn on lights, and move valuables. If you see the door has been forced open or you are concerned about someone nearby, call the police first and us second.
What to do right now
Do
Lock the door between the garage and the house, and use any deadbolt.
Move cars, bikes, tools and keys out of the garage if you can do it without going under the door.
Turn on exterior lights and any motion lights. Close the opener power with a plug-in timer if you have lights there.
Photograph the door and take note of what is jammed or hanging.
Don't
Do not force the door down or push on it from the outside.
Do not pull the red release cord while the door is up. A door with a broken spring can fall fast.
Do not stand or work under an open door that is not supported.
Do not wedge it with a board and leave. It is not a lock, and it can tip.
How we fix it
For after-hours and same-day problems we handle the work under emergency garage door repair. The technician makes the door safe first, then finds the part that is holding it open, repairs it and tests that the door closes and latches or locks. If the repair needs a part we do not have, we will tell you what the safe interim step is.
Repair or replace?
Nearly always the door can be repaired in one visit. A broken spring or cable is a repair, not a replacement. We would discuss a new door only if the door has been bent or crushed in a way that makes it unsafe, such as after a vehicle strike.
If a lock or latch is broken, we can look at that too. Security add-ons are covered in our answer on garage door security upgrades.
