How do you tell if a Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster spring is broken when you cannot see it?

How to know you have a TorqueMaster in the first place
Look at the bar above your door: a TorqueMaster is a smooth painted steel tube with no spring wrapped around it. On a standard torsion system you see a bare steel shaft with a tightly wound coil sitting on it, plus a cast fitting called a winding cone with two set screws in it. On a TorqueMaster you see none of that. Wayne Dalton describes the system as a fully enclosed spring housed in a steel tube, with no visible springs and no loose or hanging parts, because everything stays inside the tube.
The ends confirm it. Wayne Dalton's installation manual states that a TorqueMaster spring system is identified by the end brackets, which sit at the top corners of the opening on the right and left. A TorqueMaster end bracket carries a drive gear, a counter gear, a plastic counter cover, and a hex winding bolt head. A standard torsion system has none of those.
This counterbalance appears across much of Wayne Dalton's residential line. Their TorqueMaster Plus page lists Classic Steel 8000, 8200, 9100 and 9605, Carriage House Steel 8670 and 9405, Designer Steel 8310, and Designer Fiberglass 8680. Their installation library adds TorqueMaster documents for the 8100, 9600, 9510 and 9700 series. The list is not exhaustive, so treat the tube itself as the real identifier.
Why the usual broken-spring test does not work here
The standard advice is to look for a two to four inch gap in the coil, and on a TorqueMaster that gap is physically impossible to see. When any torsion spring breaks, the wire parts and the two halves separate. On an open shaft that separation is visible from the floor. Inside a TorqueMaster tube it happens in the dark, behind steel, and the outside of the tube looks exactly the same afterwards as it did before.
Wayne Dalton treats containment as a feature, not a flaw: an enclosed spring cannot become a projectile, and the company markets it as preventing injury from an accidental release of tension. The trade association DASMA makes the same point about ordinary torsion springs, noting that mounting a spring on a shaft inherently provides containment. TorqueMaster simply takes that further.
The practical consequence is the part that catches people out. A TorqueMaster owner who checks for a coil gap, finds none, and concludes the spring is fine has drawn exactly the wrong conclusion from a correct observation. Everything below replaces that test.
The cable-tension test: the one that actually works
With the door closed, pull each lifting cable away from the header at the cable drum. If the cable moves loose, that side has lost its spring tension. This is not a workaround. It is the verification step Wayne Dalton puts in its own installation manual, used there to confirm a spring has been fully unwound before a technician takes the system apart. A broken spring produces the same reading as a deliberately unwound one, because in both cases the torque is gone.
How to run it:
- Close the door and leave it closed. Disconnect the opener only if you need to, and pull the emergency release with the door down, never up.
- Find the cable drum at each end of the tube. It is the grooved wheel the lifting cable winds onto.
- Take the cable a few inches below the drum between finger and thumb and pull it gently away from the header above the door.
- A taut cable that barely moves means that side still has spring tension. A cable that pulls away easily, or already sits slack, means that side does not.
There is a second reading that supports it. Wayne Dalton's manual notes that once tension is released the spring tube should be free to rotate in either direction, and that a cable still taut with a tube that is hard to turn means tension remains. You are not trying to spin the tube. You are only noting whether it feels locked or free.
Test both ends. TorqueMaster doors come in single-spring and double-spring versions, and on a double-spring door one side can break while the other still holds. That is what produces a door that lifts crooked or drags on one side.
What the end bracket tells you
The end brackets tell you how many springs you have, which matters because the cable test is side-specific. Wayne Dalton's manual is precise about this. On a single-spring door, the right hand end bracket always has a drive gear, counter gear, counter cover and winding bolt head, and the left hand end bracket has none of them, with the winding bolt hole plugged. On a double-spring door, both end brackets carry all four parts.
One detail decides which bracket is which, and it is easy to get backwards: Wayne Dalton specifies that right and left hand are always determined from inside the building looking out.
So if both of your brackets have a hex bolt head and a round plastic cover, you have two springs and two independent readings to take. If only one does, you have one spring, and a loose cable on either side points at that single spring.
The bracket also explains why this is not a do-it-yourself repair even for a confident owner. TorqueMaster springs are wound through the winding bolt head with a 7/16 inch hex driver in a drill, and Wayne Dalton specifies a high torque or gear reduced drill and warns explicitly against using an impact gun. The number of turns is set by door height from a chart in the manual, which runs from 14 turns on a six foot door to 18 turns on an eight foot door. Guessing that number is how people get hurt.
The anti-drop device: a door that opens but will not close
On a TorqueMaster Plus, a door that opens but refuses to close, clicking as it rises, is the anti-drop device reporting a broken spring. Wayne Dalton documents this behaviour directly. The system includes a safety device that prevents the door from descending rapidly after a spring failure or forceful manual operation, and the manual names the symptom: the door opens but will not close, and makes a distinct clicking noise on the way up.
If you have that symptom, you have your answer without touching a cable.
You can also see it. The mechanism is a drum pawl at the end bracket that drops into the cable drum. Wayne Dalton's own indicator is spacing: no space between the drum pawl and the cable drum means the device has engaged, and visible space between them means it has not. Once engaged the system has to be reset by a technician, and the reset procedure itself ends by checking whether spring tension exists at all, with instructions to call a door agency for replacement if none is found.
One limit worth stating plainly. Wayne Dalton documents the anti-drop device as a TorqueMaster Plus feature. If your door is an older TorqueMaster without it, the absence of clicking proves nothing. Use the cable test.
The weight test, and how to do it safely
A door with a broken spring is close to its full dead weight and will not stay put where you leave it. A correctly counterbalanced door stops and holds roughly wherever you release it. A door with no spring support drops as soon as you let go, or refuses to move at all.
Run it the way DASMA's inspection checklist does, or do not run it:
- Start with the door closed, then pull the manual release to disconnect the opener. DASMA warns that a door may unexpectedly begin to open when an operator is disengaged.
- Lift by the handles or the moulded gripping points. DASMA is explicit that the joint between two sections is not a suitable gripping point and that gripping there can cause serious injury.
- Lift a few inches, without straining. If it feels like lifting a piece of furniture rather than a door, stop there. That is your reading.
- Lower it back to closed and reconnect the opener.
Skip this test entirely if the cable test already told you a spring is gone, if the door is currently open, or if you would be lifting alone. Wayne Dalton's own reset instructions say to be prepared to support the total weight of the door, and that is not a small ask.
Do not force the door with the opener to see what happens. Running an opener against an uncounterbalanced door pulls cables off drums, racks the door out of square, and can bend a section, which turns a spring job into a spring, cable and panel job.
What happens next, and why TorqueMaster is a different job
A broken TorqueMaster spring is a parts-matched repair, not a generic spring swap. The counterbalance is a Wayne Dalton exclusive design, and the springs, winders, gears and end brackets belong to that system rather than to the open aftermarket that serves standard torsion springs. Wayne Dalton's installation manuals sort residential counterbalances into three groups, extension spring, TorqueMaster, and standard torsion, and the removal procedure for TorqueMaster shares almost nothing with the other two.
That shapes the visit in three ways:
- Identification comes first. A technician carrying standard torsion stock cannot fit it to a TorqueMaster tube. Say the word TorqueMaster when you book, or describe the smooth tube with no coil on it.
- Both springs get considered together. On a double-spring door the surviving spring has the same age and cycle count as the one that failed, so replacing the pair keeps the door balanced and avoids a second call.
- Conversion is a real option. Some owners replace the enclosed system with a standard open torsion shaft, trading the clean look and the containment for parts any technician can source. It is a bigger job up front and worth pricing against a like-for-like repair.
Until then, leave the door closed and the hardware alone. DASMA's guidance for homeowners is that if a problem turns up during a visual check, the check stops and a trained technician takes it from there. A sealed spring is safer than an exposed one when it fails, but the tube, the cables and the drums are still holding a heavy door under load.
