Garage door remote or keypad stopped working?

Is this what you're seeing?
The wall button inside the garage opens the door, but the remote or outside keypad does nothing.
A new or spare remote won’t program to the opener.
The remote only works when you’re right next to the door.
You moved into a house and don’t know which remotes are programmed to it.
What's going on
Remotes and keypads talk to the opener’s receiver using a rolling code. They have to be paired through the learn button on the motor unit, and the opener only remembers a limited number of them.
The usual causes are a dead battery, a remote that has lost its pairing, a wireless keypad with a changed or forgotten code, or an older opener that can’t learn newer remotes. If the wall button also fails, the problem is the opener itself.
What to do right now
Do
Try the wall button. If it works, the opener and door are fine.
Replace the remote or keypad battery.
If you moved in recently, ask us to clear the old codes so only your remotes open the door.
Don't
Don’t hold the learn button for long if you’re unsure. On many openers that erases every remote at once.
Don’t buy a universal remote until you know which opener and code system you have.

Repair or replace?
A remote or keypad problem is almost never a reason to replace the opener. The exception is an opener too old to learn current remotes. Then a new opener is the cleaner fix.
