Garage door cable repair
Garage door cable frayed or rusty?
Broken wire strands on a lift cable mean it is weakening and can fail without warning. Rust alone is less urgent but worth watching. Do not adjust the cable tension, because the cable is under heavy load.

Is this what you're seeing?
You can see little wire strands sticking out of the cable, usually near the bottom or the drum.
The cable has orange rust, or the surface looks fuzzy or flaked.
One cable looks stretched, or you see a flat spot where it bends over the drum.
The cable looks looser on one side or has slack at the bottom.
You wonder if it is about to break, or whether you can tighten it.
What's going on
Lift cables are stranded steel, and the strands break first at the spot where the cable bends or is gripped. Broken wire strands, called "birdcaging" or "fishhooking" when they stick out, are the signal that the cable is losing capacity. The cable is not going to fail on the day you first see them, but each broken strand moves the load onto its neighbors.
Rust matters most at the bottom end, down near the bottom bracket, and where the cable passes over the drum. Surface rust on an otherwise tight cable can be cosmetic. Rust that has pitted the wire, or a cable that has stiffened and stopped bending smoothly, is a different thing. Road salt, wet garage floors, a leaking roof, and condensation on cold mornings all speed this up in our area.
People often ask whether they can just tighten a slack cable. Please do not. The cable ties directly into the torsion spring tension and the bottom bracket, which are under very high load. Adjusting one side changes how the door is balanced and can lock in a lean. An accident with a loaded cable or a released bracket can cause serious injury. Slack is also a symptom, not the cause. It usually means the cable has slipped off the drum or the spring has lost its balance.
What to do right now
Do
Look from the floor with a flashlight, at the cable near the bottom corner and at the drum, and note how many strands are broken.
Take a clear photo of each cable end so we can judge the damage.
Use the door as little as you can until it is checked, and stop if it feels off.
Call us before the next heavy use if you see broken strands.
Don't
Do not touch the cable with bare hands. Broken strands are sharp.
Do not loosen, tighten or adjust the cable, the drum set screws or the bottom bracket.
Do not coat a damaged cable in oil and carry on.
Do not hang anything from the cable or lean a ladder against it.
How we fix it
This is garage door cable repair. We examine both cables over their full length, both drums, the bottom fixtures and the spring balance, then replace cables that show broken strands, deep rust or kinks, and set them to equal tension.
Repair or replace?
A frayed or rusty cable is a repair, and a good time to do it, because replacing it before it breaks avoids a dropped door and a larger repair. We normally replace both cables together.
If the cable has already rubbed through a section or the bracket is torn, a section replacement might be needed as well. We will point it out before anything is done.
