Car2U

Definition

Car2U is an in-vehicle home automation system made by Lear Corporation that lets drivers program their factory-installed car buttons to control a garage door opener or gate. It is built into the overhead console or sun visor of compatible vehicles and communicates directly with the garage door receiver without a separate remote transmitter.

Car2U is a built-in wireless control system made by Lear Corporation. It is installed at the factory in the overhead console or sun visor of compatible vehicles. It lets the driver program one or more vehicle buttons to control a garage door opener, gate operator, or other home automation device without carrying a separate handheld remote.

Car2U competes with HomeLink, which is the more widely used in-vehicle system from Gentex Corporation. Both systems allow programming to rolling-code and fixed-code receivers. Car2U was installed in a number of Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and RAM vehicles from the early 2000s through the mid-2010s.

How to program Car2U:

Programming follows the same general steps as other integrated transmitters. You hold the vehicle button and the handheld remote together until the car button flashes rapidly, signaling that it has captured the remote's code. For rolling code openers, you then press the opener's learn button to sync the receiver to the new code.

One practical limit is compatibility. Car2U works with most major opener brands. However, some older fixed-code systems may not pair cleanly. Checking the vehicle owner manual confirms which protocols that specific Car2U version supports.

For example, a driver with a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup may find three Car2U buttons on the overhead console. One can be programmed to the garage door at home, a second to a gate at a community entrance, and a third to a second garage.

Car2U is a convenience feature. It does not add security on its own. The security comes from the rolling-code protocol of the opener receiver it is paired with.
