Does the LiftMaster 84505R have a built-in camera?
Yes. The LiftMaster 84505R includes a built-in camera that streams live video through the myQ app on iOS and Android. The camera is integrated into the motor unit. Note: the 84505R does not include battery backup, unlike the similar 84504R. The camera works anytime, not only when the door is in motion.
The LiftMaster 84505R is a DC-powered belt drive opener in the Secure View lineup. It includes a built-in camera integrated into the motor unit. The camera streams live video through the myQ app on iOS and Android. You can view the garage at any time, whether the door is open, closed, or mid-cycle. The 84505R also includes Security+ 2.0 rolling-code security and built-in myQ Wi-Fi. It does not include battery backup. The 84504R is the version with battery backup in the same product family. The 84505R is the choice when camera monitoring and quiet belt drive operation are the priorities and outage protection is not a top concern.
What the 84505R camera sees and how to access it
The camera on the 84505R is built into the motor unit and points toward the garage interior. It covers the door opening and the area directly inside the garage near the door. This is the most useful monitoring zone for most homes. It lets you check whether the door is open or closed, whether the area is clear before operating the door remotely, whether a delivery was placed inside, and whether any unexpected activity is happening.
Access the camera through the myQ app. After you pair the opener to your home Wi-Fi, the camera feed is available from the app's device view with a single tap. You do not need to wait for a door event. Pull up the app and the live view is there.
The camera records activity around door events. Each time the door opens or closes, the myQ platform logs the event with a timestamp. You can review recent activity, see the camera view at that time, and build a record of who entered or left the garage and when. For families with multiple drivers or homes that receive regular deliveries, this event log is a practical security tool.
The camera is positioned inside the garage on the ceiling rail. Its field of view covers the door and the interior near it. It does not provide exterior coverage of the driveway or the outside of the home. For exterior monitoring, a separate outdoor camera handles that zone. The 84505R camera is an interior tool focused on the point of entry.
Camera stream quality depends on your home's Wi-Fi signal strength in the garage. A strong signal gives smooth video. A weak signal can cause the stream to lag or drop. A Wi-Fi range extender placed between your router and the garage typically resolves signal issues.
The belt drive and what it means for daily operation
The belt drive on the 84505R is the quietest residential opener drive type. A reinforced rubber belt replaces the steel chain found on chain drive openers. The belt connects the motor to the trolley and absorbs vibration that a chain would transmit through the rail and into the ceiling.
If you have ever heard a chain drive garage door opener run from inside the house, the sound is a metallic rattle. A belt drive opener running the same door sounds like a dull hum. In an attached garage where the wall or ceiling connects to a bedroom, home office, or living space, the difference is immediate and noticeable.
The DC motor on the 84505R adds soft-start and soft-stop behavior. The door ramps up gradually at the beginning of each cycle and slows down before it reaches the fully open or fully closed position. This reduces mechanical wear on the door's torsion springs, hinges, and cables over time. DC motors also run cooler than AC motors under the same load, which is a small advantage for motor longevity.
The lifetime belt warranty on the 84505R covers the belt for the life of the opener at the original installation location. Belt drives can wear over many years of daily cycling. The lifetime warranty removes belt replacement as a long-term cost.
The HP rating for the 84505R is not confirmed in currently available sources. The opener is designed for standard single-car and double-car residential doors. Confirm with your installer if your door is unusually heavy.
The 84505R vs. 84504R: camera without battery backup vs. camera with battery backup
The 84505R and the 84504R are the same product family with one key difference: battery backup. The 84504R includes battery backup. The 84505R does not. Both have a built-in camera, belt drive, DC motor, myQ Wi-Fi, and Security+ 2.0.
If the power goes out at a home with a 84505R, the door will not operate automatically. The red emergency release cord lets you disengage the trolley and open the door by hand. For homeowners in areas with rare outages, or with a whole-home generator, this trade-off is acceptable. The 84505R delivers camera monitoring and quiet operation at a lower cost than the backup-equipped 84504R.
For Colorado homes on the Front Range, the outage question is worth considering. Summer thunderstorms and winter ice events cut power with some regularity. If your garage is attached and is the primary entry point to your home, being locked out during an outage is a real problem. In that case, the 84504R with battery backup is the safer choice.
| Model | Drive | Camera | Battery Backup | Motor Warranty | Belt Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 84505R | Belt | Yes | No | Lifetime | Lifetime |
| 84504R | Belt | Yes | Yes | Lifetime | Lifetime |
| 87504-267 | Belt | Yes | Yes | Lifetime | Lifetime |
Battery backup cannot be added to the 84505R after purchase. The backup hardware is integrated into the motor unit at the factory. If you want battery backup, buy the right model upfront. Replacing an opener because you added battery backup later is an avoidable cost.
Setting up the camera through myQ
Camera setup is part of the myQ pairing process. When you connect the 84505R to your home Wi-Fi through the myQ app, the camera becomes accessible in the app automatically. No separate camera app or account is needed. The opener and the camera are both managed through the same myQ account.
The pairing process: download the myQ app, create or log into your account, tap to add a new device, enter your home Wi-Fi credentials (2.4 GHz network), and press the Learn button on the opener when prompted. The app confirms when the connection is established. The camera view appears in your device list immediately after pairing.
After setup, adjust your notification settings. You can set the app to alert you every time the door opens or closes, only during certain hours, or not at all. Camera notifications for motion events are also available if the myQ platform supports them for your configuration. Check the Chamberlain support site for the current feature set.
What the 84505R camera setup means for a Denver-area garage
The 84505R camera is well suited to Denver homeowners who receive regular package deliveries or who want to check on the garage when away from home. Delivery theft is a concern in many Denver-area neighborhoods. The ability to check whether a package is inside the garage before remotely opening or closing the door adds a layer of awareness.
Porch piracy incidents in the Denver metro rose alongside the general growth in residential package delivery. A garage camera does not prevent theft from the driveway, but it does let you verify that a delivery placed inside the garage is secure. With the 84505R, you can open the door remotely, see via the camera that the package is inside, and close the door again.
For homeowners with children, the camera is useful for checking that no one is near the door before operating it remotely. One of the key safety concerns with remote garage door operation is operating the door when someone is in the garage without your knowledge. The camera removes that risk.
