Does the Genie Aladdin Connect work with Apple HomeKit?
No, the Genie Aladdin Connect does not have native Apple HomeKit support. Genie uses its own app ecosystem and does not publish a HomeKit integration. You can add HomeKit control using a third-party bridge device like the Meross MSG100HK ($30-40) or the HOOBS bridge with the Homebridge Genie plugin installed.
Genie Aladdin Connect is one of the most popular smart garage door control systems for Genie openers. It uses Genie's own app and its own cloud account. But Genie and Apple do not have a direct integration. If you want to control your Genie-equipped garage door through the Apple Home app, through Siri voice commands, or as part of an Apple HomeKit automation, you need a bridge device that sits between the Genie system and HomeKit. Here is how each option works and what each costs.
Why Aladdin Connect does not have native HomeKit support
Apple HomeKit certification requires that a device manufacturer build and certify a HomeKit firmware path. This involves licensing, Apple's MFi program approval, and ongoing certification for each product generation. Genie has not pursued HomeKit certification for the Aladdin Connect product line.
Genie uses Amazon Alexa and Google Home as its primary smart home integrations. The Aladdin Connect works with both Alexa and Google Assistant natively. If you use an Amazon Echo or Google Nest device, you can already give voice commands to open and close your Genie-equipped door without any additional hardware.
Apple HomeKit does not accept the Alexa or Google Home connection path. HomeKit requires either a direct HomeKit-certified device or a local bridge device running Homebridge. There is no workaround that does not involve adding hardware or running software.
Option 1: Meross MSG100HK with HomeKit (hardware solution)
The Meross MSG100HK is a garage door controller designed specifically for Apple HomeKit. It costs about $30 to $40 at major retailers. It wires to your existing Genie opener through the door control terminal (the same two-wire low-voltage terminal that the wall button uses). It does not replace or work with the Aladdin Connect account. The two systems run side by side.
Here is how to add the MSG100HK alongside an existing Genie Aladdin Connect setup:
- Locate the door control terminals on the opener head. The Genie opener has two small screw terminals labeled "door control" or "wall button" on the back panel. You will connect the MSG100HK wires here.
- Connect MSG100HK wiring. The MSG100HK has two short wire leads. Attach one wire to each of the two door control terminals. Polarity does not matter on most Genie models.
- Mount the MSG100HK sensor. The package includes a magnetic tilt sensor that attaches to the door with the provided adhesive. Mount it near the top section so it detects open/closed position accurately.
- Power the MSG100HK. Plug the USB cable into the provided power adapter near an outlet at the opener level.
- Scan the HomeKit QR code. Open the Apple Home app, tap the plus sign, select "Add Accessory," and scan the QR code on the MSG100HK unit.
- Name the device. The Home app will prompt you to name the garage and assign it to a room. Once named, Siri voice commands work immediately.
The MSG100HK and the Aladdin Connect operate independently. You will have two apps and two control paths. Most users keep the Aladdin Connect for the full Genie feature set (sharing access, door history, guest codes) and use the Home app for automations like "close the garage if I leave home."
A practical limit of the MSG100HK setup: the device does not use a direct API call to the Genie opener. It simulates a button press through the door control terminals. This works on all standard Genie models, but it does not have awareness of the Genie smart control board's security handshake (Security+2.0 and similar protocols). On Genie openers, this low-voltage terminal approach typically works without issue.
Option 2: HOOBS bridge with Homebridge plugin (software solution)
HOOBS (Homebridge Out of the Box) is a pre-configured hardware device that runs Homebridge, an open-source HomeKit bridge. It costs about $100 to $150. HOOBS makes the Homebridge installation process plug-and-play. The Homebridge community maintains a Genie Aladdin Connect plugin that communicates with your Aladdin Connect cloud account and then exposes it to HomeKit through the HOOBS bridge.
The setup approach:
- Plug in the HOOBS device and connect it to your home network.
- Access the HOOBS web interface from any browser on the same network.
- Search for and install the Genie Aladdin Connect plugin.
- Enter your Aladdin Connect account credentials. The plugin polls your Aladdin Connect account and publishes the door state to HomeKit.
- Add the HOOBS bridge to the Apple Home app using the HomeKit pairing code shown in the HOOBS interface.
The HOOBS/Homebridge approach works through the Aladdin Connect cloud API. This means it requires an active Aladdin Connect subscription and internet connectivity for commands to work. It is less direct than a wired hardware bridge like the MSG100HK, but it inherits the full feature set of the Aladdin Connect account (like door open/close history and real-time state).
The key trade-off: HOOBS costs more than the MSG100HK, but it gives you a single app integration where the Aladdin Connect cloud account is the source of truth for both apps. Genie-specific features visible in the Genie app are reflected in the Home app automatically.
Which option to choose
| Situation | Better option |
|---|---|
| You want the simplest hardware install | Meross MSG100HK |
| You already use Homebridge for other devices | HOOBS or Homebridge plugin |
| Budget is the main concern | Meross MSG100HK ($30-40 vs. $100+) |
| You want one account for door state | HOOBS/Homebridge |
| You need reliable automations without internet | Meross MSG100HK (local) |
| You want full Genie features in Home app | HOOBS/Homebridge |
Both options work. The MSG100HK is the faster and cheaper path for most homeowners who just want "close the garage when I leave home" working in Apple HomeKit. The HOOBS/Homebridge path is better if you already use Homebridge for other smart home devices and want a consistent setup.
If your Genie opener is older than about 2011 and lacks a door control terminal, consult the opener manual or G Brothers before ordering any smart integration hardware. Older models without a low-voltage wall terminal may need a safety sensor loop to allow third-party controllers.
Common questions about Genie and HomeKit
Does Aladdin Connect work with Siri? Not natively. Once you add the MSG100HK or a Homebridge-based bridge, Siri commands work immediately through the Apple Home app. You can say "Hey Siri, close the garage" and it will work.
Can I use both Aladdin Connect and HomeKit at the same time? Yes. The two systems do not conflict. You can open the door in the Genie app, and the Home app will update the door status within a few seconds. Both apps reflect the current state of the door.
Does HomeKit automations work with these setups? Yes. Once the garage door appears as a HomeKit accessory, you can use it in any Home automation. Common automations: close the garage when everyone leaves home (using location-based triggers), close at a set time each night, and open when you arrive home. All standard HomeKit automation types work.
What if I sell my home? The MSG100HK can be removed and taken with you. It is not permanently installed. The Homebridge/HOOBS approach is also portable. The underlying Genie opener stays with the home; the HomeKit bridge moves with you.
Do I need a subscription for Aladdin Connect? The Aladdin Connect system has a free tier and a paid tier. The free tier allows basic open/close and status monitoring. The Homebridge plugin uses your existing Aladdin Connect account. If you use the MSG100HK hardware bridge, no Aladdin Connect subscription is needed because the MSG100HK connects directly to the opener hardware, not through the Genie cloud.
What Genie opener models support the door control terminal? Most Genie chain-drive, belt-drive, and screw-drive openers made after 2000 have a two-wire door control terminal on the rear of the head unit. The terminal is labeled "wall button," "door control," or sometimes "wall console." Check the opener's back panel. If you see two small screw terminals near the outlet, you have a door control terminal.
