Why does my garage door rattle in the wind?
A garage door will rattle in wind when it has play in it. Loose hinges, worn roller stems, and loose track bolts let the panel shift as gusts push on it. A missing horizontal strut turns that flex into a bang you hear inside the house.
Your garage door is the largest moving panel on the house, and wind treats it as a sail. Pressure pushes the sections inward, then releases. Any looseness in the parts that hold the door flat shows up as a knock, a slap, or a steady chatter. The noise is a symptom of play, and play has four usual homes: the hinges, the roller stems, the track fasteners, and the perimeter seal. On the Front Range the wind is strong enough and frequent enough that a small amount of play gets loud fast.
What is loose when a garage door rattles
Start with the push test, because it locates the play in under a minute. Close the door, disconnect the opener with the red release handle, and push firmly on the middle of the second section from the bottom. Watch the gap between the panel and the door stop. If the door moves more than about half an inch before it meets resistance, the wind is doing the same thing every gust.
Hinges are the first suspect. Each hinge pin runs in a punched hole, and years of cycling wear that hole into an oval. Grab a hinge leaf and try to wiggle it. Slop at the pin means the panels can knock against each other. A hinge with a visibly elongated hole gets replaced, not tightened.
Roller stems are the second. The stem is the shaft that runs from the wheel into the hinge. Worn stems let the wheel wander in the track, so the door slaps sideways. DASMA's inspection guidance is to check that you can slide and turn the roller shafts in their brackets, which tells you the stems are seated and free rather than sloppy.
Track fasteners are the third and the easiest win. The lag bolts and nuts holding the vertical track to the jamb back off over time. A quarter turn of movement at the top of the track becomes an inch of movement at the panel. Snug every bolt on both tracks and a lot of doors go quiet.

Struts, wind bracing, and when the door is under-rated
A missing strut is the difference between a rattle and a door that bends. A strut is a horizontal steel channel bolted across the back of a section, and DASMA notes that manufacturers "commonly specify horizontal reinforcement (i.e., struts) to make their doors wind load resistant." Struts stop the section from bowing under pressure. On a door with no strut, the whole panel flexes and springs back, which is the deep boom you hear from inside the house.
Two struts do different jobs, and people mix them up. The operator strut goes on the top section to spread the pull of the opener arm. Wind struts are the ones the manufacturer lists on the door's wind rating label, and there can be one per section on a rated door. Check whether the door is rated at all before you spend on hardware. A wind rated door carries a label on the inside of a section or on an end stile. It lists the model, the design pressure the door was tested to, and the reinforcement that rating assumes. No label usually means no rating. On a rated door, the label also tells you how many struts belong on it, which is how we confirm that a past installer did not leave some off.
One warning worth repeating. DASMA states that a post or reinforcement not supplied or specified by the door manufacturer may not produce a door that properly resists wind, and can count as a component substitution. Bolting a generic angle iron across a door does not give it a rating.
Wind load is also a code question here. IRC Section R301.2 requires the local jurisdiction to fill in the design wind speed and exposure category for its area, and Front Range towns set those numbers high. If your door was replaced without matching the wind rating on the permit, a rattle in a 50 mph gust is the door telling you it is working outside its design. Gaps and seals that turn wind into noise
Whistling and fluttering come from the perimeter, not the hardware. Wind moving through a gap makes the vinyl flap, and that flutter reads as a rattle even when every bolt is tight. Check three places with the door closed and a flashlight outside at night.
The top seal on the header should touch the top section along its whole length. The jamb seals on both sides should press against the door face, not stand off it. The bottom seal should compress against the slab with no daylight at either corner. Colorado slabs often settle unevenly, so a bottom seal that fits at one corner can be an inch short at the other. Seals are also why the noise gets worse in winter here. Vinyl and rubber stiffen in the cold, so a seal that flexes in July stands off the door in January and lets wind under it.
What we do about a rattling door in the Front Range
We tighten and measure in that order, because tightening is free and it changes what the measurements mean. A visit starts with every track bolt, hinge, and roller bracket on both sides. Then we check hinge pin wear, roller stem play, and whether the door has any strut behind the top section. That covers most rattles.
The rest are wind rating problems. Federal records show why. NOAA's Boulder wind data logs a 115 mph gust in Arvada on December 30, 2021, and counts 73 separate events at or above 70 mph in January alone across its record. After a windstorm, DASMA's occupant checklist tells you to inspect the jambs, header, track, and sections for damage before running the door again. If a door has been flexing at that scale for years, hardware is only part of the answer.
One habit helps in the meantime. Leave the door closed during a high wind warning. A closed door is held flat by both tracks and by the door stops on the jambs. A half open door has an unsupported bottom edge and carries the load on fewer rollers.
