Why is my garage door opener buzzing or humming?

Short answer

A garage door opener starts humming or buzzing when the motor gets power but cannot turn the drive. The length of the sound tells you which fault it is. A one second hum points to a locked door, a broken spring, or a trolley jammed on the stop bolt. A constant buzz with the door idle is electrical.

Time the sound before you touch anything. A garage door opener that buzzes or hums is telling you current reaches the motor and something stops it from doing work. The duration of that noise narrows the cause faster than any other test. A one second grunt, a thirty second drone, and a steady buzz that never stops are three different faults with three different repairs. Get the timing wrong and you spend money on the wrong part.

What the length of the hum tells you

A hum that stops after one or two seconds means the motor tried, met a load it could not move, and gave up. Chamberlain's own troubleshooting lists three causes for that short hum on chain and belt drive units: a broken spring, an engaged door lock, and a trolley wedged against the stop bolt at the end of the rail. The opener is not broken in any of these. It is protecting itself.

Check the lock before you check anything else, because it is free and it is common. Walk the inside of the door and look at the second section from the bottom on both sides. A slide bolt thrown into the track holds the door hard enough that a motor cannot lift it. Then look at the wall console for a lock indicator, which disables remotes but does not hold the door.

A hum that runs for about thirty seconds is the opposite. The motor is spinning freely for its whole travel time with nothing hooked to it, which happens when the trolley is disconnected from the door arm. Someone pulled the release handle and never reconnected. Run the opener until the trolley meets the carriage, then run the door until it clicks back in.

Screw drive and wall mount units have their own timings. On a screw drive, a hum lasting more than five seconds points to a stripped rack, the black threaded piece inside the rail. On a wall mount unit, Chamberlain notes that a hum of two seconds or more can mean "The Collar May Be Slipping on the Torsion Bar," which is a set screw problem at the shaft, not a motor problem at all.

Capacitor or stripped gear: how to tell them apart

Listen for whether the motor turns at all. That single question separates the two most common internal failures.

A failed capacitor means the motor never starts. The capacitor is the cylinder that gives a single phase motor the kick it needs to begin rotating. Without it the windings energize, sit there, and hum at a low steady pitch. Nothing spins. Press the button and you hear the same dead hum going up as going down. A capacitor that has failed often shows a bulged case or an oily film at the end, and it can hold a charge after the unit is unplugged, so it is a technician's part.

A stripped drive gear is the reverse. The motor spins fast and free, so you hear a whir or a rattle rather than a flat hum, and the chain, belt, or screw never moves. Look on the floor under the motor head for white or grey nylon shavings. That dust is the worm gear teeth, and finding it settles the diagnosis. Do the door test before either. Pull the release handle, then lift the door by hand. If it is heavy or will not stay put around waist height, the door is the problem and the opener was straining. DASMA's inspection checklist uses that same balance test and asks whether the door stays in a partly open position 3 to 4 feet above the floor. If it does not, stop and get the springs handled before anyone blames the motor.

Then run a cleaner version of the same test. Leave the door disconnected on the release handle and press the button. The motor now has almost nothing to pull. If it still hums without turning, the fault is inside the unit and no amount of door work will change it. If the trolley runs the rail normally, the opener is healthy and the door is the problem. When the buzz is electrical, not mechanical

If the buzzing continues while nobody has pressed a button, unplug the opener. That one step decides everything that follows.

If the buzz stops when you unplug the unit, the sound is coming from inside the opener. The usual source is the low voltage transformer that feeds the wall control and the safety sensors. Transformer laminations loosen with age and vibrate at line frequency, which produces a steady buzz you can hear across a quiet garage. It is not a safety fault by itself. It does say the unit is aging, so on a buzzing head we check the wall control wiring and the sensor voltage before condemning the logic board.

If the buzz keeps going with the opener unplugged, the sound belongs to the building. A buzzing receptacle, a chattering breaker, or a GFCI device that is failing to reset all make that noise, and all three are an electrician's job, not a garage door job. Garage receptacles are normally required to be GFCI protected, and the CPSC explains that a GFCI cuts power in milliseconds when current leaks to ground. A device that hums, gets warm, or trips repeatedly is a fault signal. Do not keep resetting it.

There is a third kind of hum that is neither. A ceiling mounted opener transmits motor vibration straight into the joists, and the house frame turns it into a low drone in the room above the garage. Nothing is wrong with the opener. Anti vibration pads at the hanger bracket cut most of it.

What we check on a buzzing opener

Our first move is the hand test, then the clock. We disconnect the door, check the balance, and time the sound on a button press before we open the motor head. That order matters because a large share of the openers we get called out to are healthy motors fighting a door problem, and a new opener would have fixed nothing.

Cold matters here too. An unheated garage in the Denver metro can sit near 10 degrees on a January morning. Chassis grease stiffens, the door drags harder, and a capacitor that was marginal in July fails on the first hard cold snap. That is why buzzing opener calls cluster in winter across Arvada and the rest of the metro.
