Rolling Door Guide
A rolling door guide is a vertical steel channel fastened to each jamb of a commercial rolling door opening. The edges of the curtain travel inside these channels as the door opens and closes, keeping the curtain aligned and sealing the gap between the curtain edge and the jamb.
A rolling door guide is the vertical steel channel assembly mounted to the jamb on each side of a commercial rolling steel door. The slat curtain's edges run inside these channels for the full height of the opening, from the floor to the point where the curtain leaves the guide and begins coiling around the barrel overhead.
The guide performs two jobs at once. First, it keeps the curtain traveling in a straight, controlled path without drifting or buckling under wind pressure. Second, it closes off the gap between the curtain edge and the wall, blocking air, water, pests, and debris.
Most guides are fabricated from formed steel angle or channel. The depth and width of the channel must match the slat profile. A mismatch causes the slat edges to bind in the guide or to allow excessive side play that rattles in wind.
On fire-rated rolling doors, the guide is part of the listed assembly. Removing or modifying it without using a listed replacement invalidates the fire rating under NFPA 80.
On high-performance doors with flexible vinyl curtains, guides often incorporate brush seals along the inner face. The brushes let the curtain edge pass at high speed while still blocking air infiltration.
Guide depth at the jamb must leave clearance for the chain hoist mechanism and any required emergency hardware. Installers check that guide bolts penetrate into solid masonry or steel framing, because wind load transfers from the curtain through the guide into the building structure.
