High-Performance Door
A high-performance door is a commercial door built to open and close at speeds up to 100 or more inches per minute. The fast cycle time limits how long conditioned interior air is exposed to the outside and reduces traffic congestion at busy dock or production openings.
A high-performance door is a commercial door built to cycle at very high speed. Clopay reports some models open at 24 inches per second, roughly 144 inches per minute. Standard commercial sectional doors move at 6-8 inches per second. A high-performance door makes the same trip in a fraction of the time.
That speed matters because every second the door is open, conditioned air escapes. Outdoor air, dust, and pests can also enter. Cold-storage warehouses, food processing plants, and pharmaceutical facilities use high-performance doors to keep interior conditions stable.
A facility door that opens 50 times per shift benefits from every second saved on each cycle. Over a full workday, the difference in air infiltration and energy cost is significant.
The curtain is usually reinforced flexible vinyl or fabric, not rigid steel slats. Flexible material travels faster without the weight and inertia of a steel curtain. Some designs use a break-away bottom bar. If a forklift hits the door, the bar disconnects instead of damaging the door structure.
Because the door runs constantly, cycle life is the most important spec. A busy distribution center door may reach 500,000 cycles over its service life. Drive parts and curtain materials must be rated for that volume.
The rolling door guide keeps the curtain aligned at high speed. Wider guide profiles and brush seals are common on fast-cycle doors.
