Dock Seal
A dock seal is a rubber or foam perimeter seal mounted around a loading dock door opening. When a truck backs up to the dock, the trailer body compresses the seal on three sides, creating a weathertight barrier that blocks outside air, moisture, pests, and contaminants from entering the building during loading.
A dock seal is a compressible foam or rubber seal frame mounted to the exterior wall around a loading dock door opening. The seal is sized to contact the rear corners and top of a truck trailer when the vehicle backs into the dock. The trailer body presses against the foam pads, compressing them and forming a tight perimeter barrier between the trailer and the building wall.
That barrier serves several functions. It keeps conditioned air from escaping the warehouse and blocks outside air from entering. In climate-controlled or refrigerated facilities, the energy savings can be significant because product sits in an exposed dock opening for extended periods during loading and unloading. The seal also blocks rain, insects, and rodents from entering the facility while the dock door is open.
Main types:
- Foam pad seal: Three flat foam sections (two side pads and a head pad) covered in durable fabric or vinyl. They compress easily and recover quickly when the truck pulls away.
- Inflatable seal: A bladder that inflates around the trailer after it docks, conforming to irregular trailer shapes and providing a tighter fit than fixed foam. Common in high-traffic or refrigerated operations.
For example, a grocery distribution center operating at 34 degrees Fahrenheit depends on dock seals to maintain temperature at every loading door. Without them, cold air leaks at every truck gap.
Dock seals are typically used alongside a dock leveler, which bridges the height difference between the dock floor and the truck bed. Together, the leveler and seal create a controlled transfer zone that keeps temperature, contamination, and pests out during every loading event.
