Can I connect my garage door opener to Apple Home, Google Home, or SmartThings using Matter?
Matter 1.4 does not natively define garage door openers as a device type, but Matter-certified devices exist that work via relay or switch workarounds. THIRDREALITY and Aqara both have Matter-compatible controllers that work with Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, and Alexa. Local alternatives like Konnected blaQ skip Matter entirely.
Matter is the smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Samsung SmartThings, and Amazon. It promises that devices from different manufacturers work together through a single hub without proprietary cloud locks. In 2025, Matter 1.4 is the current version. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) governs the Matter specification and certifies devices.
The challenge for garage door users is that Matter does not yet have a native garage door device type. That means there is no direct plug-and-play Matter garage door controller in the same sense that there are Matter-native light bulbs or door locks. But practical options do exist, and they work well in the major platforms.
Why does Matter not directly support garage door openers yet?
Matter defines specific "device types" that describe how a controller (hub) and a device communicate. Current defined types include lights, locks, thermostats, sensors, switches, and plugs. Garage door openers are not yet in that list as of Matter 1.4.
This matters because a device labeled "Matter-certified" must use one of the defined device types to earn that certification. A garage door controller that wants to be Matter-certified must present itself to the ecosystem as a switch or a relay, then use platform-level logic to treat it as a door open/close command.
The Matter Device Library working group at the CSA has included garage door control in future roadmap discussions. As of mid-2025 no finalized device type spec has been published. Expect a native definition in a future Matter release. When that device type lands, existing Matter hubs (Apple TV, HomePod mini, Alexa, SmartThings) should support it automatically through an over-the-air hub update. Devices certified before that change will use the current relay/switch approach but may receive firmware updates to support the new type.
Which Matter-certified devices work with garage doors in 2025?
Two products stand out as legitimately Matter-certified and specifically designed for garage doors:
THIRDREALITY Smart Garage Door Opener. This device is Matter-certified and connects over Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz. It attaches to the opener's dry contact terminals (the same terminals used for a wall button) and wires to a tilt/vibration sensor on the door. It appears in Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, Alexa, Home Assistant, and Homey as a switch with door-open/door-closed state reporting. It requires a Matter controller hub (Apple TV, HomePod mini, Amazon Echo, Google Nest Hub, or Samsung SmartThings hub). No subscription required.
Aqara Smart Garage Kit. Aqara announced a Matter-ready garage solution using their Dual Relay Module T2 paired with a door tilt sensor. The relay module connects to the opener's wall button terminals. It was announced at IFA 2024 and began shipping in 2025. It supports Apple HomeKit natively as well as Matter over Thread and/or Wi-Fi depending on the hub configuration. Works with Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings.
Both of these are real Matter-certified products. They work via the relay/switch workaround described above. In practice, the door shows up in your app as a switch or a cover that you can open, close, and monitor.
| Device | Matter certified | Works with | Connection | Subscription |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| THIRDREALITY Garage Opener | Yes | Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, Alexa, HA | Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz | None |
| Aqara Dual Relay T2 + sensor | Yes (Matter-ready) | Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings | Wi-Fi or Thread | None |
| Konnected blaQ | No (not Matter) | Home Assistant, SmartThings, Hubitat | Wi-Fi, local | None |
| Genie Aladdin Connect | No (proprietary cloud) | Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home | Wi-Fi | None (all features free) |
What about local control without Matter or cloud?
If your priority is local operation with no cloud dependency, Matter is not the right goal. Matter devices still require a hub with an active internet connection for initial setup and for out-of-home access. For truly local control, two options stand out:
Konnected blaQ (ratgdo successor). This is a Wi-Fi device that connects directly to the opener's security+ 2.0 or security+ 1.0 wiring. It communicates locally over your home network without any cloud service. It integrates natively with Home Assistant, SmartThings, Hubitat, and Home Bridge. It does not carry a Matter certification, but for local control it is the most flexible option available. The blaQ replaced the popular ratgdo project as the supported hardware.
Home Assistant with a local Zigbee/Z-Wave stick. A full Home Assistant setup with local automations does not depend on any cloud service after initial configuration. Garage door control can be wired through any relay or through a blaQ device. This approach has no ongoing cost and no dependency on third-party servers staying online.
Does Chamberlain myQ work with Matter?
No. As of 2025, Chamberlain's myQ ecosystem does not support Matter. Chamberlain famously blocked third-party integrations (Home Assistant, Homebridge, and others) in late 2023, then reversed part of that decision in 2024 with a limited developer API. The myQ API is still restricted and requires Chamberlain's cloud to function.
If you have a LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener and want Matter integration, the path is to add a blaQ, THIRDREALITY, or Aqara controller to your existing opener's dry-contact terminals. These controllers are standalone accessories. They do not replace or modify the opener. They sit in parallel with the existing wall button and add smart home control without affecting how the opener itself works.
What should a Denver homeowner buy in 2025?
The practical recommendation depends on your goal:
- Wide platform support (Apple + Google + Amazon): THIRDREALITY is the easiest entry point. Matter-certified, no subscription, works across all four major platforms.
- Apple HomeKit priority: Aqara Dual Relay T2 with a tilt sensor is the cleanest Apple Home integration, especially if you already use Aqara gear.
- Local-first / Home Assistant: Konnected blaQ. No cloud, no subscription, full integration with local smart home hubs.
- Simple remote access only: Genie Aladdin Connect is a strong myQ alternative. All features free, wide compatibility, works reliably without a Matter hub.
A few things to check before you buy:
Does your opener have dry-contact terminals? Most residential openers made after 1997 have a two-terminal "wall button" connection on the motor head. Controllers like THIRDREALITY and Aqara wire to these terminals. Very old openers (pre-1993) or some European-market openers may not have compatible terminals. Check your opener's manual before ordering.
Do you have a Matter controller hub? Matter requires a hub to function. Apple TV 4K (3rd gen or later), HomePod mini, Amazon Echo (4th gen or later), Google Nest Hub (2nd gen or later), and Samsung SmartThings Hub all act as Matter controllers. If you only have older Echo Dot models or a first-gen Apple TV, confirm Matter support for your specific hub model before purchasing a Matter-certified device.
Is your garage Wi-Fi signal strong enough? Both THIRDREALITY and Aqara use Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz. A garage that is far from the router or separated by concrete walls may have a weak signal. A Wi-Fi range extender placed in or near the garage solves this. Thread-based devices (like some Aqara configurations) extend the Thread mesh through other Thread devices in the home, which can be a more reliable path in garages with poor Wi-Fi.
