DASMA TDS 172 - Garage Door Labels

Summary

DASMA TDS 172 describes the labels that must be permanently affixed to a sectional garage door, including the wind pressure rating label required by IRC R609.4.1, the manufacturer's model and size label, and safety warning labels.

The label on a garage door is not just a sticker. It is the permanent record of what the door was designed and tested to handle. Building inspectors, home inspectors, and code officials rely on it to verify compliance without performing an engineering calculation. DASMA TDS 172 describes exactly what the labels must say and where they must go.

What this data sheet says

TDS 172 describes the labeling requirements for residential and commercial sectional garage doors, referencing IRC R609.4.1 as the primary code authority for wind pressure labeling.

"The permanent wind pressure label identifies the door's rated design pressure and must be affixed to the door in a location that is accessible after installation."

Key label requirements from TDS 172:

  • Wind pressure label: must state the door's rated design pressure in psf (both positive and negative), the door size (width and height), the manufacturer's name, and the model or series. It must be permanently attached to the door interior.
  • Model/manufacturer label: identifies the product line, manufacturing date code or serial number, and key specifications. This label is often near the top panel on the interior face.
  • Safety warning labels: required by CPSC and UL 325, these appear on the door panels and on the operator. They cover pinch points, spring hazards, and the requirement not to permit children to play with controls.
  • Placement: labels must be located where they can be read after the door is installed in the opening, meaning they cannot be covered by finish work or track hardware.

When it applies

TDS 172 is relevant in several scenarios:

  • Building permit final inspection: the inspector looks for the wind pressure label to confirm the door's DP rating matches the design requirement for the site.
  • Home inspection for sale: a missing or illegible label is typically noted as a deficiency. The buyer may ask for documentation or a replacement door.
  • Insurance claim after wind damage: the label documents what the door was rated to handle, which is relevant to whether the damage was within or beyond the design load.
  • Door replacement selection: the existing label tells you the size and model spec you need to match or exceed in the replacement.

In Denver, where the 2025 DRC requires documentation of wind load compliance at permit inspection, a legible and accessible wind pressure label is not optional.

What this means for you

Find your label now and photograph it. The label fades and becomes difficult to read over time. Taking a photo of it when the door is new (or when you move in) gives you a permanent record of the door's specifications.

A door without a visible label is not necessarily non-compliant, but it cannot be easily verified. If you are buying a home and the inspector cannot find the label, ask the seller for the door's installation documentation or the manufacturer's model number so you can look up the spec.

Replacement windows in door sections can cover label locations. If you install aftermarket window inserts, confirm they do not cover the model or wind pressure label.

G Brothers affixes all required labels during every door installation and can help locate existing labels on older doors during a service call.
