NFPA 80
NFPA 80 is the National Fire Protection Association standard that governs the installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire door assemblies. It covers rolling steel fire doors, sectional doors, and swing doors used as fire barriers, specifying how the full assembly including door, frame, hardware, and closing device must be installed.
NFPA 80 (Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives) is the National Fire Protection Association standard that governs fire door assemblies. In the garage door industry, it applies mainly to rolling steel fire doors. These are installed in openings between a garage and an attached building, between fire compartments in a commercial building, or at loading dock openings in sprinklered warehouses.
What NFPA 80 covers:
The standard covers the full assembly, not just the door panel. Each of these must meet the listing:
- The door curtain or panel, which must carry a label from a nationally recognized testing lab. Common fire ratings are 3/4 hour, 1-1/2 hour, and 3 hour.
- The frame, guide, or jamb the door seats against when closed.
- The hardware, including springs, closers, and latches.
- The release device, typically a fusible link that melts at a set temperature and lets the door drop closed.
Field substitutions void the listing:
All components in a listed fire assembly must match the listing or be explicitly permitted by it. Swapping the listed rolling door bottom bar for an unlisted part can void the fire rating and create a code violation. The listed assembly must stay complete. Annual inspection is also required: each fire door must cycle fully and close under its own closing device to confirm it still seats correctly in the frame.
Relationship to building codes:
The International Building Code (IBC) and most state and local codes adopt NFPA 80 by reference. When a fire-rated opening is required, the door must be installed per NFPA 80. Fire marshals and inspectors use it during occupancy reviews. DASMA technical data sheets reference NFPA 80 for rolling fire door compliance. UL 10B (Standard for Fire Tests of Door Assemblies) is the applicable test standard used to rate the rolling steel fire door curtain. UL 10C (Standard for Positive Pressure Fire Tests of Door Assemblies) applies to swinging doors and is not applicable to rolling steel fire doors.
