How do you program a Genie G3T-R remote to a garage door opener?

Short answer

Press and release the learn button on your Genie opener, then press and hold the button on the G3T-R you want to program until the opener lights flash. The G3T-R uses Intellicode 2 at 315 MHz and works with Genie openers made after about 2011. It will not work with older 390 MHz Intellicode openers.

The Genie G3T-R (also sold as the G3T-BX or GITR3-BX) is a 3-button remote that uses Genie's current Intellicode 2 rolling-code technology at 315 MHz. Programming it takes about one minute with two steps at the opener. This page covers the standard programming process, which compatible opener models work with the G3T-R, and what to check if the remote will not learn.

What you need before you start

The G3T-R programs directly to any Genie opener that has a learn button and uses the Intellicode 2 system. You need access to the opener motor head - usually mounted on the ceiling of the garage - to press the learn button. You also need a working battery in the remote. The G3T-R takes one 3V CR2032 coin cell battery. If the battery compartment cover has never been removed, pop it open and verify there is a battery installed before you start.

You do not need a screwdriver or any tools. The entire process is done by pressing buttons on the opener and on the remote. No wiring or app setup is required.

One check to make first: confirm that your opener uses Intellicode 2. Openers with a purple or blue square learn button are Intellicode 2 and are compatible with the G3T-R. If your opener has a different style learn button or was manufactured before approximately 2011, it may be an older 390 MHz Intellicode model. The G3T-R will not work with 390 MHz Intellicode openers. See the compatibility section below if you are unsure.

Step-by-step programming instructions

Step 1 - Optional: clear existing codes. If you are replacing a lost remote and want to remove access for the old one, press and hold the learn button on the opener for about 6 to 10 seconds until the indicator light goes out. This erases all programmed remotes and you will need to reprogram any other remotes you want to keep. If you are just adding a new remote to an opener that already has other remotes programmed, skip this step.

Step 2 - Activate learn mode. Press and release the learn button once. The indicator light on the opener will glow steady for about 30 seconds. You must complete the next step within that 30-second window.

Step 3 - Program the remote. On the G3T-R, press and hold the button you want to use (button 1, 2, or 3) for about 3 seconds, or until you see the opener lights flash or hear two clicks from the motor. Release the button. The flashing lights or two clicks confirm the code was accepted.

Step 4 - Test. Stand near the opener (within 5 feet) and press the button you just programmed. The door should move. If it does not, repeat step 2 and 3 once before troubleshooting.

Some Genie opener models require pressing the remote button twice during step 3 rather than holding it. If one press-and-hold does not work, try pressing the button twice quickly. Your opener's manual will specify which method applies to your model.

Which Genie openers are compatible with the G3T-R

The G3T-R works with Genie openers that use Intellicode 2 at 315 MHz. This covers most Genie residential openers made from roughly 2011 onward. The compatible model families include:

Model series Drive type Notes
SilentMax 750, 1000, 1200 Belt Current Intellicode 2 models
StealthDrive 500, 550, 750 Belt Current Intellicode 2 models
ChainMax 500, 750, 1000 Chain Current Intellicode 2 models
MachForce HP Screw High-performance series
7155, D7155L, E7155L Belt/Wi-Fi Wi-Fi models with Aladdin Connect
3142, 3155 Chain/Belt Mid-range current models

The G3T-R is not compatible with older models that use original Intellicode at 390 MHz. These include openers paired with GICT390-1, GIT-1, GIT-2, or GT912 remotes. If your existing remotes have those model numbers on them, you have a 390 MHz opener and the G3T-R will not work.

How to use the three buttons independently

The G3T-R has three buttons that can each be programmed to a different opener. This is useful if your home has two or three separate garage bays with individual openers, or if you want one button for a gate and another for a garage.

To program button 2 or button 3 to a second opener, simply repeat the programming steps at that opener: press the learn button on the second opener, then press and hold the desired G3T-R button until the second opener confirms the code.

Each button stores one opener code. You cannot program two openers to the same button - the second programming would overwrite the first. If you only have one opener, buttons 2 and 3 remain unprogrammed and pressing them does nothing.

The G3T-R also has a visor clip on the back and is sized to fit most automotive sun visors. The buttons are large enough to press while wearing gloves, which matters in a Colorado winter.

Troubleshooting when the G3T-R will not program

Remote does not trigger the opener during testing. First check the battery. A low battery in the G3T-R prevents the remote from transmitting enough signal to reach the opener from a distance. Replace the battery and try again standing directly under the opener. If it works close up but not from the car, the battery is weak or there is radio interference in the area. LED bulbs in the garage can also interfere with opener radio signals. If you recently changed the garage light bulbs to non-approved LEDs, that may be the source of the problem.

Opener light does not glow when you press the learn button. The learn button may be faulty, or the opener may be in an error state. Check the opener for diagnostic blink codes first. If the opener has an active blink code, it will not enter learn mode. Resolve any sensor or wiring fault shown by the blink code, then try programming again.

Lights flash but door does not move after programming. Press the button again from close range. If the door moves close up but not from 20 feet away, your opener's antenna wire may be damaged or coiled up inside the motor head. The antenna is a thin wire that should hang down freely from the motor unit. Uncoil it and let it hang straight down. This often restores full range right away.

You have an older opener and the G3T-R simply will not pair. This is almost always the 390 MHz vs 315 MHz mismatch. The G3T-R is Intellicode 2 only. Confirm your opener's generation using the learn button color or model number before buying another remote. If you find your opener is 390 MHz, you need a GICT390-series or GIT-series remote instead. These are not stocked in most local hardware stores but are available through Genie's authorized dealer network.

G Brothers sells and installs Genie remotes and openers across the Denver metro and Front Range. If you are not sure which remote your opener needs, we can confirm compatibility on-site and have same-day service available with free estimates on all calls.
