What are the different garage door types?

Short answer
The main garage door types fall into two groups: the material the door is made from and the way it is built and styled. The common materials are steel, wood, aluminum, and glass. The common styles are traditional raised-panel, carriage-house, modern flush, and full-view glass. For most Colorado homes, an insulated steel door in a style that matches the house is the practical, value-driven choice.

Picking among garage door types is easier once you see what each one is good at. Here is how they compare on cost, upkeep, and how well they hold up to our climate.

Garage door types by material

Material sets the price, the look, and how much care the door needs:

  • Steel is the most popular. It is affordable, low-maintenance, available insulated, and resists Colorado's sun and temperature swings. It is the default for good reason.
  • Wood brings real warmth and high-end curb appeal. It costs more and needs refinishing every few years to handle our dry, sunny air.
  • Aluminum is lightweight and rust-resistant, often paired with glass for a modern look. It dents more easily than steel.
  • Glass and full-view doors use aluminum frames with glass panels for a striking, contemporary face. They are the premium end and let in daylight.

Many doors also come in composite or faux-wood finishes, which give the look of wood on a steel or fiberglass body with far less upkeep.

Which material is right for your home?

For most Colorado homes, insulated steel is the right material. It gives the best balance of price, upkeep, and durability, which is why it is the popular choice on the Front Range. Use these criteria to decide:

  • Steel wins if you want the most value, the least maintenance, and a door that shrugs off sun and temperature swings. Add insulation for an attached or heated garage.
  • Wood wins if curb appeal is the priority and you will keep up the refinishing every few years. A faux-wood steel door gives the look with far less work.
  • Aluminum and glass win for modern homes that want a clean face and daylight, as long as you accept a higher price and a panel that dents more easily.

Be careful chasing the lowest sticker price. A thin, single-layer bargain door fades, dents in hail, and gets replaced sooner, so the cheapest door is rarely the best value. An insulated steel door costs a little more up front and lasts longer, which means a lower cost per year of service. Garage door types by style

Style is about how the door looks and operates:

  • Traditional raised-panel is the familiar sectional door with rows of panels. It suits most homes and is the easiest on the budget.
  • Carriage-house mimics old swing-open barn doors but rolls up on modern tracks. It adds character to craftsman and ranch homes.
  • Modern flush uses smooth, clean panels for contemporary houses.
  • Full-view glass is the showpiece option for modern builds and finished garages.

Nearly all residential doors today are sectional, meaning they travel up in hinged panels and store flat against the ceiling. Older one-piece tilt-up doors are rare now. For a closer look at which styles fit different Denver homes, see our overview of garage door styles in Denver.

Insulated or not?

Across every material and style, you can usually choose an insulated or non-insulated version. Insulated doors have a foam core that keeps the garage closer to room temperature, cuts noise, and stiffens the panels against dents.

For an attached garage, a heated space, or a room above the garage, insulation is usually worth the small added cost. For a detached, unheated storage garage, a single-layer door is fine. Our guide on garage door insulation walks through when it pays off.

Garage door types for Colorado weather

Our climate should shape the choice as much as looks. Front Range homes deal with intense sun, dry air, big temperature swings, hail, and heavy snow loads. A few notes:

  • Steel and faux-wood handle sun and dry air with little fading or cracking, which is why they are popular here.
  • Real wood needs refinishing every few years to survive the dry, sunny conditions.
  • Insulated cores matter more at altitude, where garages swing from freezing mornings to hot afternoons.
  • Heavier-gauge steel resists hail dents better than thin, bargain panels.

Matching the door to the weather, not just the house style, is what keeps it looking good and working for decades.
